In the recent Tony Awards, “Schmigadoon!” took home Best Musical—but what is it about?

Schmigadoon is based off of the first season of the 2021 musical television series of the same name which was co-created by Paul and Ken Daurio.

From Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels, Schmigadoon! is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, Death Becomes Her), with a Tony Award-winning book and Tony- and Emmy® Award-winning score by Cinco Paul (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets).

The town, dubbed Schmigadoon, is a magical town where every day is a musical. Everybody has a song for everything, and the only bridge out of town leads nowhere. When one couple accidentally wanders in, they discover the only escape is finding true love — which may or may not be with each other.

Some of the tracks were played from the TV show but many were original works added to the musical. Stylistically, much of the music references the styles and motifs popularly found in songs from the 1940s and ’50s, with one of its most popular songs being titled “Corn Puddin’”

Prior to the Tony’s win, it was recognized as a New York Times Critic’s Pick and was featured in Entertainment Weekly, Time Out and Variety.

The musical made its debut at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in 2025 and made its Broadway debut earlier this year.
